Dental Exams and Cleanings

What are Exams and Cleanings?

Exams and cleanings are both part of a comprehensive preventative care routine. The exam is performed by our doctor to check for cavities, problematic restorations and signs of oral cancer. The cleaning is performed by our licensed hygienist who will clear away built-up tartar and stains from the teeth. Both cleanings and exams can prevent and detect many intra-oral conditions.

Why are Exams and Cleanings necessary?

Regardless of how long it’s been since your last dental appointment, we welcome you into our office for the care that you need and deserve. Exams and expert cleanings are essential in the maintenance and care of your teeth and gums. They can help us to detect and monitor problems before they’re able to get any worse. Both a cleaning and exam will take less than an hour in our office.

How often should you go for Exams and Cleanings?

We recommend that you come in for an exam and cleaning once every six months. Your six month appointments are a great way for us to monitor changes and provide you with the care that you need. If you have children, it’s best to get them into the office as soon as possible so that we can begin providing them with comprehensive preventative care. We can even pre-schedule your appointments for you to make them more convenient.

What happens during typical Exams and Cleanings?

The appointment starts with x-rays taken by one of our dental professionals. These x-rays are used during your appointment to check for underlying problems that would otherwise be missed. The cleaning is done using specialized tools and instruments. These help to remove debris and tartar from your teeth to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. We will check your gums for any obvious signs of inflammation or infection. The exam is done to check for tooth decay, loose or lost restorations and even signs of oral cancer. A treatment plan is created for you if any additional work is needed.
